Owl/ Elder
3/23/24
Walking to the farm with the hiking group of travelers, it is a perfect temperature, foggy and overcast. The guide talks about migratory birds and the local flora. He mentions that the pygmy owls live in this region.
Then later in our walk, we find a dead pygmy owl on the side of the road. I am elated at this gift and blessing. Everyone else speaks of sadness and tragedy of the loss of life but I exclaim, “I want its wings and admire its perfect feathers”. No one knows I am a Healer, and they all find my comment inappropriate. They do not know that my excitement comes from deep inside my soul, and it is of the utmost reverence to the medicine of the owl.
My mind wanders back to the smudging feather tool that I have been dreaming and designing during my holiday here in Mexico, for my work. I think about how the owl represents the elders and the ancient wisdom of the world. Its wings, no longer serving a purpose for the owl, would be an honorary way to cleanse others with the grace and assistance of their ancestors.
I thank the owl/ elders and continue walking.
